Transitions
Diohanti, Stergios Stamos, Nakis Tastsioglou
Curator: Bia Papadopoulou

11 June – 30 September 2009

In the last five years the Medusa Art Gallery has been running a series of art events in collaboration with art curators. In this project, an art historian or art critic is invited every year to present an exhibition, selecting the artists and proposing a subject.

For 2009, the Gallery has invited art historian Bia Papadopoulou to curate the exhibition “Transitions”. The participating artists are Diohanti, Stergios Stamos and Nakis Tastsioglou.
The exhibition forms part of the events for the 2nd Biennale of Athens under the title “Heaven”.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, 11 June at 8 in the evening.

The artists explore the notion of transition as a structural element of the show. Their architectural interventions in the exhibition space of the gallery alter its true dimensions in an illusory way. They cooperated closely to set up their works into a single artistic environment, transforming the room into a collective artwork and thus subverting the traditional concept of a group exhibition.

The in situ installations engage in a constructive dialogue while retaining the defining traits of each artist. Functioning as the aesthetic fragments of a harmonious whole and at the same time as independent artworks, creating fluid, rhythmic transitions and Heraclitian passages for the viewer.

From everyday reality to the world of the absurd (Tastsioglou), from the universe to the totally unknown (Stamos), from darkness to light (Diohanti), the artists examine the concept of transition as both a structural element and a conceptual quest.
