«Επιστροφή στην πόλη με την εξαιρετικά συμπαγή ομαδική έκθεση «Μεταβάσεις» που επιμελείται, στο πλαίσιο της Biennale της Αθήνας, η ιστορικός Μπία Παπαδοπούλου. Την επιλέγουμε σαν πρώτο σταθμό του αποκαλόκαιρου διότι, πέρα από τα – εν πολλοίς – γνώριμα έργα των τριών καλλιτεχνών που συμμετέχουν, η έκθεση ανιχνεύει την έννοια της μετάβασης σαν δομικό στοιχείο, ενοποιώντας τον αρχιτεκτονικό χώρο της γκαλερί «Μέδουσα» με τρόπο υποδειγματικό.
Οι συμμετέχοντες Διοχάντη, Στάργιος Στάμος και Νάκης Ταστσιόγλου επεμβαίνουν στο χώρο και τροποποιώντας τις πραγματικές του διαστάσεις, καταλήγουν σ’ ένα ενιαίο περιβάλλον. Σ’ ένα – αν θέλετε – συλλογικό έργο, που ανατρέπει την παραδοσιακή ιδέα της ομαδικής έκθεσης. Εγχείρημα το οποίο, προφανώς, προϋποθέτει και στενή συνεργασία αλλά και ουσιαστικές ανταλλαγές μεταξύ καλλιτεχνών και επιμελητού.
Τα έργα, ενώ διατηρούν την αυτόνομη εικαστική τους αξία, παρατηρούμε πως σχηματοποιούν ένα σύνολο με ρευστά περάσματα από το ένα σκέλος στο άλλο. Για παράδειγμα η Διοχάντη (από τους πρώτους καλλιτέχνες στην Ελλάδα που δημιούργησε, στα τέλη του ΄60 , in situ εγκαταστάσεις εξελισσόμενες στο χώρο) αναδημιουργεί για την τρέχουσα έκθεση δύο αντικριστούς τοίχους από ζωγραφιστά τελάρα (panels), τοποθετημένα σαν δομικά στοιχεία. Η αφηρημένη γραφή τους διαβάζεται διαδοχικά, μεταδίδοντας την αίσθηση του ατέρμονος. Το ένα από αυτά περιλαμβάνει θραύσματα από το έργο του Στέργιου Στάμου: ένα επεξεργασμένο λογοτεχνικό κείμενο του Hawking, χαρακτηριστικό της δουλειάς του Στάμου, ο οποίος συνηθίζει να παραθέτει, σαν βασικό στοιχείο των εγκαταστάσεών του, εμβληματικά κείμενα με την μορφή απεικόνισης. Στην προκειμένη περίπτωση είναι διατυπωμένο επάνω σε τοίχο που εσωκλείει δέκα κατακόρυφους σωλήνες νέον και παραπέμπει αλληγορικά σε φωτεινές κοσμικές σήραγγες.
Σε αυτό το σημείο γίνεται και η μετάβαση προς την γλυπτική εγκατάσταση του Νάκη Ταστσιόγλου μέσω μιας πόρτας από διάφανο πλεξιγκλάς, προσφιλές υλικό του καλλιτέχνη, που οδηγεί σ΄ ένα χώρο καλυμμένο με παραμορφωτικούς καθρέπτες που αντικατοπτρίζουν τα είδωλα των θεατών αλλά και των γειτονικών έργων. Τα αναποδογυρίζουν, τα αναστρέφουν ξανά, αλλοιώνουν την όψη τους «ακυρώνοντας» τον νόμο της βαρύτητας.
Αποτέλεσμα, μια εν εξελίξει σύνθεση που μεταφέρει την αίσθηση της διαρκούς, δημιουργώντας όπως σημειώνει η επιμελήτρια, ένα χώρο αυτοσυγκέντρωσης και στοχασμού. Εν προκειμένω, θα προσέθετα και αναστοχασμού γύρω από ζητήματα που αφορούν τη συνέπεια στη συλλογική εργασία.
Diohandi, Stergios Stamos, and Nakis Tastsioglou reexamine the traditional principles that underlie a thematic group show. The artists’ preoccupations, their close collaboration and fertile interchange of views and ideas during their frequent meetings at the gallery led to an original conception realized in situ. The artists converted Medusa gallery into a single, collective environment that functions as a harmonic Whole. The works forming the ensemble maintain their autonomous artistic value as well as the representative characteristics of each artist’s overall oeuvre. The current project focuses on the ways in which the recipient/viewer perceives a group exhibition and deals with the idea of transition, not only as a conceptual but also as a structural and compositional element. The show further implies the need of communication and solidarity among artists in an epoch that tends to diminish timeless human values. From the beginning of her career in the late 1960s, Diohandi was interested in the synergy between art and architecture. Originally in Rome in 1970 and then in Athens in 1971, she is among the first artists in Greece to produce in situ installations. She had then felt the need to free herself from the strict boundaries of the canvas, using instead a series of canvases to create austere painterly environments; visual geometric narratives that unfolded in space. She later experimented with drawings on paper to create works in space, with large-scale sculptural installations or with a combination of painterly, sculptural and architectural elements to form sequential compositions, always conceived in relation to the given space-time, that could mentally continue ad infinitum.
Remaining faithful to the basic principles of her art, for this particular exhibition Diohandi creates two new opposite walls in the Medusa gallery. She produces an installation with canvases placed next to one another, like construction elements, from the floor to the ceiling. With the use of black, gray, and white, she paints abstract images. They are read successively from one canvas to the next and convey a sensation of infinity. The compositions, dark in the lower sections, gradually brighten higher up. The viewer’s gaze is guided towards the source of light. The artist activates the visitors’ imagination, tempting them to expand the compositions with their mind’s eye. According to the methodology that she herself applies, recipients are mentally taken to a utopian space where absolute white prevails, the archetypal color of redemption and purification.
Diohandi’s central wall contains a fragment of Stergios’s work, namely the beginning of a phrase from Stephen Hawking’s book “A brief history of Time”. The phrase continues on Stergios’ adjacent installation. The text establishes a fluid passage from one work to the next, once again promoting the successive reading of the image – this time from artist to artist. Stergios builds his own wall in which he cuts ten perpendicular cavities to enclose neon tubes with an allegorical allusion to cosmic tunnels. He processes the surfaces of the construction using mixed materials in successive layers to create high-relief textures of white, his gestural movements deliberately underscoring the manual work and contrasting with the frigidity of the industrial material. Hawking’s thought on space-time travel, that “improved men” may experience some time in the future, unfolds upon these processed surfaces. The tubular cosmic tunnels of time-space that connect one spot with another in a remote area of the Universe had concerned Stergios again in 2004. At the time, he deconstructed extracts from the scientist’s text, allowing the viewer to read only a few scattered words. Now, Hawking’s phrase can be clearly read. Stergios ends it with his own metaphysical concern about afterlife, about the routes that human souls may already be taking once they have penetrated the mysterious tunnels of the Universe. The neon tubes emit a harsh light as a symbol of cosmic energy. It appears to pierce the wall, to free itself, to diffuse in space in order to converse with the other artworks in the exhibition.
The spectator of this environment comes before a door with transparent Plexiglas elements: the passage to Nakis’s installation. The long and narrow path that the artist created invites the viewer to walk in. Lined with distorting mirrors, it composes a psychedelic, constantly changing microcosm of the absurd. The mirrors reflect the visitors’ images, turning them upside down in defiance of the laws of gravity and then righting them up again, distorting the appearance of things. Funny pictures, unexpected abstract shapes, fleeting movements, random happenings, distorted fragments of Diohandi’s and Stergios’s works as well as sections of the central gallery space are momentarily depicted on the walls of this claustrophobic corridor. The work functions like a live movie that unfolds in time and constantly changes according to the location of the spectator.
Nakis’s tunnel stands as an allegory for the real world, a world full of surprises, extreme Heraclitean antitheses, inconsistencies and deep irrationalities. The narrow layout of the space has a psychological effect; it hastens the visitors’ exit, leading them to a metaphorical escape from the present. Along the way one comes across another doorway made of iron –an earthly, sturdy material– and Plexiglas – a seemingly intangible element and a trademark of the artist’s work. The work on the wall emits a discreet light and forms a barrier, a closed and impenetrable gate as symbol of the elusive dream. By hindering the viewers’ progress, Nakis leads them back to the collective artistic environment; to a space of concentration and meditation.
