«Arrays» , 29/01/2009 – 7/03/2009

On Thursday 29 January at 8 in the evening, Maria Dimitriadi opens the exhibition of the new series of works by Maria Vlandi under the general title “Arrays”. This is the third solo exhibition of M. Vlandi at the Medusa Art Gallery.

The works are sculptures, mostly of large size, made of clay in light or darker tones. Placed horizontally, vertically or lying on the floor, these modular sculptures carry deep incisions on their concave or convex surfaces. As the main element in the works, these incisions give the impression of a superficial or deeper ‘peeling’ of the material – a peeling which turns into an opening, a tear or a split which divides the sculptures into two parts or more.

Are they architectural elements?
The inside of the human body?
The ‘new’ that is born out of the old?
Or a symbolic quest for the essence of things?

As noted by art historian Yannis Kolokotronis, the sculptures of Maria Vlandi generate an inevitable sensation of dynamism, as the artist produces in her own unique fashion an original version of methodical abstract art and provides the pleasure of ambivalent interpretation.
Maria Vlandi was born in Athens, and received painting lessons at the studio of Hatzinikolis– Sarafianos. She graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in Rome in 1976 (painting) and from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1978 (pottery).
She has received the 1st Award of the Panhellenic Ceramic Art Exhibition in Athens four times, in 1982, 1983, 1993 and 1995. She was awarded silver medals in the International Ceramic Art Competition in Faenza, Italy in 1985 and the Gualdo Tadino International Contest in Italy in 1994. In 2003 she received the 3rd Artistic Intervention Award for the Amarousio Metro Station in Athens and the 1st Artistic Intervention Award for the Ano Patissia Metro Station.
She has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, most recently in the 4th Hellenic-Turkish Pottery Symposium at the Garanti Sanat Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2005 she exhibited at the Apothiki Gallery, Paros together with Costas Lefkochir (“Maria Vlandi – sculpture, Costas Lefkochir – painting”), and in 2005 she created her work for the artistic intervention at the Metro Station of Ano Patissia in Athens.
