On Wednesday, November 21 at 8.00 in the evening, Maria Demetriades opens the group exhibition “Ink” at the Medusa Art Gallery.

The exhibition forms part of the series of thematic group shows that Medusa Art Gallery has been organising annually since 2003, featuring Greek visual artists beyond those associated with the gallery and curated by Greek art historians; the curator of this year’s “Ink” exhibition is Elissavet Plessa.

Featuring works by twelve artists, the exhibition centres on ink as a live, fluid material rather than on its linear-outlining function. It focuses on ink’s behaviour when it acts like aquarelle or a blot, when it is diluted and questions its materiality, irrespective of type, colour (Indian ink, pseudo-ink, sepia, etc.) and surface (paper, canvas, parchment, etc.). In the Medusa show ink often stands as a gesture, a wound, but this is not to say that the featured works are exclusively abstract. Special emphasis in this thematic exhibition is placed on works which set off from representation as a starting point to reach a delicate limit, the threshold of abstraction; it is where ink, having started from the form, allows its very nature to dominate the work and become the subject itself.
Duration of the exhibition: 21 November 2012 – 19 January 2013
