Yannis Colocotronis
During the last decade there has been created in Greece a neoexpressionistic and neofiqurative trend as a separate movement but with several correlations and references to the international trends of the ‘80s. This introductory remark is confirmed through the new work of Katerina Apostolidou, for the work presented in the artist’s first individual show is the creative result of careful study, selected elements assimilation and further more the personal reconstruction of the artistic problematic on international neoexpressionistic and neofiqurative researches of the ‘80s.
Her themes are taken from nature; by enlarging and emphasizing fragments of the natural environment such as roots of trees or parts of mountainsides, Katerina Apostolidou tries to achieve in her work what Nietzsche defined as art in his famous book “The Birth of Tragedy”, that is not just to imitate natural reality but to encounter the metaphysical complement of natural reality. Could however, this unity’s theme satisfy a romantic, prophetic and also premonitory disposition of the artist towards the menacing danger of the ruthless destruction of man’s natural environment by man himself? “My attitude towards the problem is purely poetical, it is something that can hardly be described with everybody words and phrases. Mu continuous effort to widen the limits towards new fields of sentiments, and an opening towards sensibility, juxtaposes the general alienation (human relations – natural environment): this is the case with the effort of sensitization to the ecological problem”.
Katerina Apostolidou reply touches the essence of today’s existential impasses and restores Nietzsche’s tragical myth to the extent that it really belongs to Art and the “active” artist. The artist’s image production follows the indefinite rules of “the material’s building up” on the two - dimentional surface of the canvas. The cotton waste’s deeping in paint, a movement carrying the heavy historical load of de Kooning’s – Yves Klein’s powerful gesture is followed but its attachment to the canvases surface and the farm’s moulding up shaping the material after. Here Apostolidou is about involving a plastical adventure.
The intensity of gesture in a bidirectional relation to emotional overloading and on the other hand the artist’s effort not simply to write down her intentions but also to transform the natural landscape into an internal suggestive – psychological field, convey an extended sympolical character that also participates in the general transformational, metaphysical purpose of Art
