In search of another dimension
The setting is no longer the same: the man who used to emerge –naked, at various stances, always the same– from the impressive memories of grey or ebony hues (broad, violent brush strokes, dynamic moves, ‘choked’ clearings of light) is no longer before us. Almost. Probably. At any rate, he now longer appears from one painting to the next with angel’s wings, or with an embalmed crow (that black demon who dreams between earth and heaven, man and animal, the living and the dead…) held tight against his chest or on a pedestal before him. Nor does he appear wearing the hat of a madman (or is it of someone tortured at Abu Ghraib…) and holding lilies of purity in his hands, as an evangelist of new heavens. Solitary, strange, narcissistic, ambiguous, tragic and comical at once, this man with the many masks and the infinite guises continues to exist, continues to investigate the silence, the why, the how, the maybe and the in-between. It is the way that has changed. The enigmatic representational works of the previous period, which were based on the chemical, photographic processing of the image, remain on the fringe of his artistic quests, and so do the small colourful aquarelles or his large compositions of the last two years.
Yet some new demands (or are they very old?), aesthetic as well as existential, impose their compelling presence lately: what we see now is mainly these. The artist Antonis Nikoglou reassumes today his original capacity: the architect-urban planner becomes geometrician… His is a special geometry, of course. The shapes that emerge on his painted surfaces –a parallelepiped, a cube, any geometric form– appear to hover in a space without gravity, without any worry about Renaissance perspectives, or perhaps they deliberately abolish it in a universe where no shadows are cast, where volumes do not exist in the way we usually perceive them, where the only lighting comes from the levels of colour; these, in turn, are only disturbed by the subtle effects of the illusionist chromatic fields.
We soon realise that before any forms and shapes Α. Ν. first paints the concept –the ideal, arbitrary, abstract concept– of each shape and form, and then a special kind of objects which are recognisable and hence comforting. The very origin of the forms, mathematical and logical, is constantly disputed (almost abolished) within the illusionary space of the painting. This serves to heighten the alertness of both vision and spirit, restoring to the viewer the ability to wonder, to dispute, to seek explanations, to imagine other dimensions and other spaces and times: another, powerful Harmony. Returning by side roads to the nature of his youth and to his original science, Α. Ν. does no more than address to both the agonies and the questions which have always tormented him, just as they tormented some great precursors of twentieth-century at some crucial moments in European history and culture, with the creative tension and flame that only poetry can nurture and rekindle. In doing so he opposes, without even trying, the complete absence of meaning in what is generally called ‘real’, contemporary or simply ‘new’. Moving firmly away from the narrow ‘passage’ which has swallowed up hordes of contemporary artists who do not tire of churning out variations of the same subject with much the same (mainly technological) media, Α. Ν. prefers to wander around the vast, unexplored fields of creation which are only open to a few solitary walkers with a free spirit. The primordial geometric forms in his paintings are ultimately the most faithful (self)-portraits of an architect of the depths of human spirit and creator of the memories of inner suns.
In the year 2005, amidst a world which we had envisioned differently and almost one hundred years after the suprematists and the neo-plasticists, after Mondrian, Malevich and all the others, it is time we let objects inundate the windows of supermarkets, the television screens and the dusty shelves of neo-conservatism and started breathing again, at last.
