On Thursday, 14 March, 2013, at 8 p.m., Maria Demetriades is presenting Dora Pulmann’s solo exhibition, a painter of distinction and importance.

This is the sixth in a row solo exhibition by this notable and engrossing artist, who has twelve group exhibitions to her credit.
In her present work, created in the last two years in charcoal and acrylic on linen, Pulmann, true to her vision which her inner being always manages to enhance, as Dora Iliopoulou Rogan writes, reaches the acme of perfection. In her signal latest works, the personal idioms of the artist ― who has worthily won the high esteem of her teacher, Yánnis Móralis ― through their thematic rhythm and compositional vibration, sweep to good effect the visitor into the “ever-flowing” motion they evoke in space, all round. A motion, which orchestrated via innumerable inspirational solutions, multiplies ingeniously the perusal of one and the same work, at the same time revealing its poetic “dimension”. In an always inventive watershed between what is natural and what metaphysical, between material tangibility and spiritual intangibility, Pulmann puts forth the rhythms of cosmogony.
In fact, as the very “Idea” of motion has been deciphered here along with the rhythm identified with it, Pulmann’s oeuvres tally with the Platonic definition of art: that is, in order to be authentic it is obliged to contain an idea and not constitute an imitation.
By relentlessly and ardently cultivating the application of this very idea, Pulmann secures in time her charismatic painterly as well as poetic idiom.

Στην μαγεία του ρυθμού

Στην πρόσφατη ενότητα δουλειάς της, την οποία η αξιόλογη και ενδιαφέρουσα ζωγράφος Ντόρα Πούλμαν θα παρουσιάσει σε ατομική έκθεση από τις 14 Μαρτίου στην Μέδουσα, έχει αγγίξει μια διαπασών στο πλαίσιο της μέχρι τώρα εικαστικής της πορείας. Δουλεύοντας με κάρβουνο και ακρυλικό σε αχνούς τόνους πάνω σε λινό, η δημιουργός, που είχε επάξια κερδίσει την εκτίμηση και το θαυμασμό του Γιάννη Μόραλη στην ΑΣΚΤ, όπου έκανε τις βασικές της εικαστικές σπουδές πριν τις ολοκληρώσει στο Croydon College of Art (Αγγλία), κατορθώνει πάντοτε να ανανεώνει το όραμά της εκ των ένδον.

Κυρίαρχη ανέκαθεν η παλμική γραμμή στα αφηρημένα έργα της καλλιτέχνιδας συνευρισκόταν ανά περιόδους με έντονα ή με λιγότερο έντονα χρώματα για να προβάλει και πάλι όσο γίνεται πιο λιτή και αυτάρκης στα τελευταία της έργα. Έργα που υποβάλλουν μια «αέναη» κίνηση στο χώρο ολόγυρα. Κίνηση που, ενορχηστρωμένη μέσα από ανεξάντλητες σε πνοή λύσεις, πολλαπλασιάζει ευρηματικά τις αναγνώσεις ενός και του αυτού έργου, για να αποκαλύψει συγχρόνως την ποιητική του «διάσταση».
Σ’ ένα πάντοτε ευρηματικό μεταίχμιο ανάμεσα στο φυσικό και το μεταφυσικό, στο υλικό – οργανικό και στο άυλο – πνευματικό, η Πούλμαν υποβάλλει τους ρυθμούς της κοσμογονίας. Ακόμη, η καλλιτέχνιδα κατορθώνει μέσα από την εξαιρετικά παλμική γραμμή και τα πλέγματα μέσω των οποίων ενορχηστρώνει το πάντοτε ρυθμικό ίχνος να υποβάλλει από τα έργα της την αίσθηση του χώρου. Αίσθηση που προκαλεί εντύπωση, δοθείσης της εξαιρετικής λιτότητας των μέσων.

Διττή, η καλύτερα, τρισυπόστατη η έννοια της δημιουργίας εδώ, καθώς πέρα από την εικαστική γραφή επισημαίνουμε μια ποιητική διάσταση και την «εγγραφή» μιας μουσικής σε υφή αρμονίας, εντυπώνεται ανεξίτηλα στη μνήμη και στην ευαισθησία του θεατή, σε σημείο, μάλιστα, που να αισθάνεται ότι συμμετέχει οργανικά και ψυχικά στο έργο.
«Ποιώντας» στη σημερινή εποχή της παγκοσμιοποίησης και της αντιγραφής ένα απόλυτα προσωπικό έργο, η Πούλμαν όντως εκτελεί μια προσφορά στο χώρο της τέχνης. Υλοποιώντας ευρηματικές κάθε φορά λύσεις ως προς το ρυθμό, τη φορά, την κινητικότητα του ίχνους και δίχως ποτέ να επαναλαμβάνεται, εξαϋλώνει ολοένα και περισσότερο την υλική υπόσταση του έργου. Υπόσταση που χαρακτηρίζεται από ιδιάζουσα ατμόσφαιρα.

Όντως, στην παλμική γραμμή της Πούλμαν μοιάζει να έχει διεισδύσει μια μεταφυσική σε υφή ενέργεια που ενεργοποιεί την όλη σύνθεση. Η ύλη στις συνθέσεις της ζωγράφου έχει συρρικνωθεί δημιουργικά προς χάριν της υποβολής της έννοιας του πνεύματος. Είναι αυτή καθαυτή η έννοια της πλατωνικής «ιδέας» που εμπεριέχεται εδώ, για να τεκμηριώσει προς χάριν της Πούλμαν τον ορισμό του μεγάλου φιλοσόφου για την τέχνη, ότι δηλαδή, για να είναι αυθεντική πρέπει να εμπεριέχει μια ιδέα και να μην αποτελεί μίμηση. Την ιδέα της κίνησης της συνεχούς μεταλλαγής της ρευστότητας στη διευθέτηση ενός χώρου και της ενέργειας που εξασφαλίζεται και υποβάλλεται με έναν ιδιαίτερα λιτό και υποβλητικό τρόπο εμπεριέχουν τα «ποιητικά» εικαστικά έργα της ζωγράφου. Γι’ αυτό και μας εντυπώνεται διαχρονικά.
Έργα της δημιουργού, η οποία έχει μέχρι τώρα οργανώσει εφτά ατομικές εκθέσεις, βρίσκονται στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό.

In her present work ― charcoal and acrylic on linen painted in the last couple of years ― Dora Pulmann, true to her vision, which her inner being always manages to enhance, reaches the acme of perfection. In her signal latest works, the personal idioms of the artist ― who has worthily won the high esteem of her teacher, Yánnis Móralis ― through their thematic rhythm and compositional vibration, sweep to good effect the visitor into the “ever-flowing motion” they evoke in space, all round. A motion, which orchestrated via innumerable inspirational solutions, multiplies ingeniously the perusal of one and the same work, at the same time revealing its poetic “dimension”. In an always inventive watershed between what is natural and what metaphysical, between material tangibility and spiritual intangibility, Dora Pulmann puts forth the rhythms of cosmogony.
Developing inductively her painterly expression from the outset of her artistic career to the present, the talented painter creates, in every case, a completely personal work based on a drawing. A charcoal drawing in harmony with an acrylic colour. A colour varying in tone and vividness as per the artist’s conception. A vividness that in the artist’s previous show had touched a climax, allowing her to provide again in her current work preeminence to the predominance of the black-white contrast. A contrast turned to advantage via the acrylic colour in inconspicuous yellowish tones. Pulmann’s present oeuvres, a creative development of an earlier ensemble of works (ca. 2000) that we were also deemed to admire at the Medusa Art Gallery, have gained much more vis-à-vis simpleness and the application of an enduring rhythm. Now, the totally discreet presence of acrylic colour (whitish and yellowish hues) sets off the artist’s unique manner: the pulsating charcoal drawing on linen material.
By continually enhancing her private vision, to which she remains at all times faithful, in her present works the artist, painting-wise, has managed to release them ― as is feasible ― from the bonds of matter, thus employing with idiomatic directness the “idea” of rhythm and motion. An inventive “twosome” that creates and orchestrates a singular ― and charismatic ― creative perspective. Indeed, Pulmann creates every time a “self-sown” place. A place which, in her present creations, impresses with its exceptional and unprecedented simple means. The theme and in general the artist’s genre, embodied in inventive, so to speak, “ideograms”, effect a continuously interchanging action dynamic-, orbit- and rhythm-wise. An action that appears autonomous and independent even of that surface: the linen material on which the drawing appears. Special tissues of vibrating lines in readiness to be transformed, readjusted and restructured appear autonomous but never unrelated to the surrounding space, thus substantiating in many forms the long-lasting rhythm-cum-vibration that imbues them. When one views Pulmann’s oeuvres, one senses “acts” and “situations” on a charismatic border between creation and form. A non-binding borderline by reason of being willfully “dubious” apropos its development, thus providing the spectator with countless interpretations and explorations. Here, each work throwing into relief a living organism thanks to the tie up between the surface and the painterly genre, does away with any obstacle or braking off as regards its communion with the environment and, consequently, with the spectator.
Endowed with the beating of her soul, the painter’s works substantiate the highly personal and instinctive connection of her painterly gesture with her psychism. Pulmann paints to the rhythm of her soul, endowing her self-reliant works with ineffable poetry. The painter’s charismatic drawing, sensitized in the extreme even when it comes to the slightest spiritual “vibrations”, endows with superb mobility whatever line or yet linear tissues rising self-existent, animating even the substance of linen material. Composition and surface, inventively coexisting through the theme’s rhythm-cum-pulsation, communicate on a more than one wavelength for the spectator, in order to point out to him or her countless fanciful and inventive trends. Trends that stir in the spectator the inclination to imagine, trace and interpret uncertain but existing personal experiences and situations.
One could characterize Pulmann’s work as an ode to the pulsating-cum-rhythmic theme. And this, because it is doubly creative, since it also presents the poetic dimension of this, the very harmonious identifying quality of her painterly genre. A genre whose mobility-cum-pulsation initiates us into an idiomatic musical harmony, as well. Notwithstanding the painterly, poetic and musical nature of her oeuvre, the three-dimensional instigation convinces as to the contained Idea: infallible token of an artwork’s authentic breath. This very “Idea” of perpetual creativity is indeed contained here, doing justice, yet again, to the creations of this important artist ― creations that have now reached an unprecedented peak in the context of the artist’s constantly evolving painterly course.
